Background on HIV/AIDS Care
Global Statistics for HIV/AIDS
Consultation Services

The global effects of HIV(1) and AIDS(2) are staggering. Since the discovery of HIV and AIDS in 1981 and the end of 2005, more than 25 million people had died of AIDS. The epidemic has significantly impacted the physical, emotional and financial well-being of many individuals, communities and nations. In 1990, 8 million people were estimated to be living with HIV. By the end of 2005, this figure had risen to 38.6 million. Approximately 63% of those living with HIV were situated in Sub-Saharan Africa. Women were reported to constitute 45% of all adults living with HIV worldwide but accounted for 59% of infected women in Sub-Saharan Africa at the close of 2005. This Sub-Saharan region was also home to 80% of the 15 million AIDS orphans(3). Young adults between the ages of 15 and 24 accounted for approximately 50% of all new HIV infections globally near the close of 2005 - approximately 6000 people in this age range became infected with HIV every day. The devastating consequences of the disease are apparent and the call to action is urgent. The statistics below give an overview of the AIDS epidemic globally, regionally and specifically in the countries of Thailand and Tanzania where the Projects has two projects
