“Health is not simply the absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.”

Welcome to the Laura Louie Hope Projects. I would like to share a little bit of my background with you. I am a third generation Canadian born in Vancouver, Canada. As a child and teenager, I travelled extensively overseas with my family. These experiences gave me an appreciation of cultural diversity as well as a compassion for those less fortunate. I became inspired to do humanitarian work within the international community. But achieving that goal has been a long journey. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology in 1983 from the University of British Columbia and was a field geologist for many years working in northern Canada and abroad. After eight field seasons, I made a dramatic change, switching from ‘rocks’ to the human body. I had always been fascinated with medicine and the inner workings of the body. I studied and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Medicine (Physiotherapy) in 1989 from the University of British Columbia. However, I soon desired more of a holistic approach and found it in the study of complementary and alternative medicine. I earned my Master of Science in Acupuncture in 1993 and my Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine in 1994 from Bastyr University* in Seattle, Washington. In 1994 and 1998, I completed post-graduate studies in China for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology). I began working as a Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist in 1995 at a private clinic in Vancouver. After 6 years of practice, I decided to follow my dream of doing humanitarian work and took a one year sabbatical to explore volunteer medical opportunities abroad. This search eventually led me to the Mae On Hospital in northern Thailand and the beginnings of a new and fulfilling life path in the field of collaborative humanitarian healthcare. Please see our Projects section for more details.
